In July 2019, Florida Orthopaedic Associates celebrated our 50th anniversary. The timeline below highlights some the milestones and accomplishments that got us here.
Celebrate 50 Years with Us


1969
Drs. Richard Huster and Taylor Griffin open Huster and Griffin, M.D., P.A., becoming the first orthopaedic surgeons in DeLand, Florida.

1972
Huster and Griffin, M.D., P.A. opens its second office in Deltona.

1975
Soon after Dr. Royce Hood, Jr. joined the practice, Huster, Griffin & Hood, M.D., P.A. moves the DeLand office to its current location at 740 West Plymouth Avenue.

1975
On-site x-ray services are offered at the practice.

1978
Dr. Hood performs physicals on the local high school athletes.

1988
The practice changes its name to Orthopaedic Associates of West Volusia, P.A.

1991
Dr. Mark Hollmann joins Orthopaedic Associates of West Volusia. Board-certified and fellowship-trained, Dr. Hollmann plays an integral role in the advancement of joint replacement surgery in Central Florida.

1991
Orthopaedic Associates of West Volusia partners with Stetson University to provide comprehensive orthopaedic care for their athletes. Dr. Hollmann serves as head team physician for all athletic teams.

1995
Orthopaedic Associates of West Volusia moves its Deltona office to Orange City.

1996
Orthopaedic Associates of West Volusia changes its name to Florida Orthopaedic Associates.

1997
Shortly after Dr. Stephen Reed joins the practice, Florida Orthopaedic Associates expands to Seminole County with its Lake Mary office.

1998
The addition of Dr. Stephane Lavoie brings a new level of medical service to patients, being the only fellowship-trained spine surgeon in the Sanford and West Volusia areas.

2005
Certified Orthopaedic Physician Assistant, Henry Samsoe, PA-C joins the practice and is responsible for patient care from prescribing medication to administering musculoskeletal joint injections. He also supports and manages both pre-operative and post-operative appointments for surgical patients.

2006
Florida Research Associates forms to provide research specializing in orthopaedics.

2007
Dr. Jonathan Waldbaum joins the practice as its first Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician, specializing in the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal injuries with a particular focus on back and neck injuries.

2008
Dr. Hollmann is the first surgeon in Central Florida to perform the MAKOplasty® robotic partial knee replacement surgery.

2008
Ashley Reed Manresa, PA-C joins the FOA team providing comprehensive patient care to all patients within the practice and surgical first assistance to the physicians.

2011
Dr. Royce Hood provides a new minimally invasive approach to hip replacements with direct anterior hip replacement surgery at Florida Hospital DeLand.

2013
Practicing in Central Florida since 1974, military veteran Dr. Thomas Brodrick joins the practice. Dr. Brodrick was a successful engineer before going to medical school.

2014
FOA welcomes Dr. Brandon Steen who specializes in primary and revision shoulder replacements, reverse shoulder replacements, as well as arthroscopic shoulder and elbow procedures.

2015
Dr. Mark Hollmann establishes a Rapid Recovery Total Joint Program for total hip & total knee patients at Florida Hospital Deland. This program is first of its kind in Volusia County and allows patients to leave the hospital the next day after their total hip or total knee procedure.

2015
FOA welcomes DeLand native and joint replacement specialist Dr. Nathan Turnbull. Dr. Turnbull is experienced in direct anterior hip replacement, minimally invasive partial knee replacement, reconstruction of failed hip and knee replacements and complete fracture care.

2016
Florida Orthopaedic Associates expands in Volusia County with the opening of its fourth office in New Smyrna Beach.

2017
FOA welcomes Physician Assistant Michael Cool, PA-C to the team.

2017
Physician Assistant Nicholas Baroni, PA-C joins the team.

2017
Physician Assistant Tyler Sawyer, PA-C joins the team.

2018
Dr. Hollmann is recognized as one of the most experienced joint replacement specialists in Central Florida, ranking 10th in the State of Florida for performing the highest volume of total knee replacement procedures.

2018
Due in large part to Florida Orthopaedic Associates’ physician experts, Florida Hospital DeLand receives designation as a shoulder replacement center of excellence. It is the only facility within Volusia County to receive accreditation in all three joint replacement areas (shoulder, hip, and knee).

2018
Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, in partnership with Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon Dr. Lavoie, receives Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for spinal surgery. Fish Memorial is the only hospital facility in Volusia or Flagler Counties to earn certification for spinal surgery from the Joint Commission. The hospital also earned certification for total hip and total knee replacement surgery.

2018
The FOA walk-in clinic opens in Orange City. The clinic is dedicated to treating sports injuries, breaks, accidents, sprains and fractures.

2019
FOA announces the opening of its physical therapy clinic as part of the DeLand office.

2019
Dr. Lavoie and AdventHealth Fish Memorial are the first in Florida to use TrackX Technology, an advanced image-guidance system for spine procedures.

2019
Dr. Turnbull is the first physician in Volusia County to use the Mako™ Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery for joint replacements; performed at AdventHealth Fish Memorial. Drs. Hollmann, Reed, Turnbull and Thomasson are also using the robotic technology for total knee and partial knee procedures at AdventHealth Fish Memorial.

2019
Dr. Steen was invited to participate as faculty at the 6th annual DJO revision shoulder arthroplasty course in Tampa. He participated in a panel discussion on managing humeral bone loss and taught the cadaver labs.

2019
FOA welcomes Physician Assistant Josh Stewart, PA-C to the team.

2020
Florida Orthopaedic Associates was recognized by the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce and Orange City Alliance as a Platinum Legacy Member for our 40+ years with the Chamber.

2020
Physician Assistant Ryan Adamcik, PA-C joins the team.

2021
AdventHealth Fish Memorial recognized Dr. Stephen Reed for his 28 years of service in providing compassionate orthopaedic care for the Central Florida community.

2021
Florida Orthopaedic Associates moves its New Smyrna Beach office to 617 Canal Street. The new location includes a Walk-In-Clinic.

2021
Dr. Lavoie presented the paper “Does Indirect Decompression vs. Open Decompression in Percutaneous Interbody Fusion Provide Better Results?” at the International Society for Advancement of Spine Surgery Conference.

2021
Dr. Reed performed the area’s first total knee replacement surgery with Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA Knee Robot at Central Florida Regional Hospital.

2021
Dr. Lavoie demonstrated the OptiLIF procedure during the 2021 North American Spine Society Annual Meeting. “OptiLIF will have a major impact on the standard of care related to low back and leg pain. I was excited to share this technology with other surgeons and watch them experience it for the first time at NASS.”

2021
FOA welcomes Physician Assistant Kristen Gillespy, PA-C to the team.

2022
FOA welcomes foot and ankle specialist Dr. J. David Watts who specializes in general surgery and foot and ankle injuries. His training includes complex lower extremity deformities and reconstruction such as ankle replacements, Charcot foot, arthritis, bunion and hammertoe correction, and innovative minimally invasive and arthroscopic surgical techniques.

2022
“From the moment, 30 years ago, when Dr. Mark Hollmann, a former Division I College Athlete, moved to DeLand, he has been a leader with the Stetson sports medicine division, and a terrific teammate for Stetson University,” said Director of Athletics Jeff Altier. “Stetson has been very fortunate to have Dr. Hollman as a mainstay of the Athletic Department for 30 years.”

Physician Assistant Jonathan Burnham, PA-C joins the team.

FOA welcomes Dr. William “Bill” Browning who specializes in sports medicine with a special emphasis in arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement of the shoulder, hip, and knee. In addition, he treats ligament and tendon injuries commonly seen in athletes such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, meniscus tears, and rotator cuff or labral tears.

2023
The addition of Dr. John Prodoehl expands our general orthopaedics and joint replacement surgery offerings to East Volusia’s South Daytona, Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach, and Edgewater communities.

FOA welcomes Dr. Morad Chughtai, our only fellowship-trained hand surgeon specializing in hand, wrist and upper extremity surgery, sports medicine, microsurgery, and congenital deformity treatment.
